Greeting Parents,
We are looking forward to an exciting spring! This month we are learning about parts of a plant, insects and bugs, and the life cycle of a butterfly, Easter, the Easter bunny, Easter eggs, and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.
During the Happily Ever After Reading Readiness Program, the students have been introduced to Unit 6. This unit is titled the Nightingale. In this unit the children will listen to the tale, The Nightingale, by Hans Christian Andersen. In the story, the Emperor longs to hear the beautiful song of the nightingale, but when the nightingale flees the palace to return to the forest, the Emperor receives a mechanical nightingale. The mechanical bird cannot take the place of the real nightingale. The emperor becomes sick as he wishes to hear the songs of the real nightingale. One day the real nightingale returns. The emperor listens to songs of the nightingale and becomes well again. The children will also learn many important concepts such as left, right, first, next, last and the color black.
Here are some quick reminders and updates:
Planting and Butterflies: As the days get warmer, our class is beginning our study of spring! Our spring unit contains an extensive science curriculum. Some of the highlights include planting and growing herbs in the classroom to take home and “having caterpillars stay with us until they become butterflies!”
Classroom Garden Party Thursday April 30th - This event is especially for the children only as a culmination of our plant studies. We will be eating fruits and veggies and reading “The Surprise Garden”
Family Project: Your child will create a culture collage on oak tag paper. It should show where your family comes from. Please include your country or countries flag(s), pictures, landmarks, food and any other information you might want to share. Please allow your child to write the facts and cut out the pictures. As always if you have any questions, feel free to email me. This is our last project for the school year, so enjoy it and have fun with your child, as they explore their heritage. Project due date: May 12th
Sight Words Spelling Test: Please practice writing the following words with your child: Can, Come,& Down. Our sight words spelling test will be on Friday May 2nd
Homework: Please check your child’s folder today for a review packet. Please complete the homework packet over the Easter break, and return it on April 28th.
Reminders:
Uniforms: Since the weather will vary between rainy, warm, and sunny we ask that you dress your child in light layers that can easily be removed or added to depending on the child’s comfort level. - Always have a change of clothes packed and if we send your child home with a change of clothes, please send back a new change of clothes. They should include a pair of socks, a pair of underwear, a t-shirt, and pants.
Behavior: Please speak to your child about appropriate classroom behaviors. We are still following our behavior chart policy. If your child receives a yellow or a red check on his/ her folder, he/she will not receive treasure chest on Friday. Kindly review classroom rules with your child daily.
Absences: Please remember that any day off you take from school requires a note. You can hand write a note or get a formal excuse note from the doctor. Please make sure to bring one in the day you come back to school. If your child is sick, please keep him/ her home. If he/ she has a fever, please keep your child home for 24 hrs before returning to school.
Missing Items: Weekly: Reading Logs (bring in on Fri). Many of our students are not completing their reading logs. Please make sure that your child is logging the stories they’ve read every Tuesday and Thursday.

February was fabulous! We learned about St. Valentine, primary colors and discussed famous African Americans during black history month.
Our Step Up ceremony (graduation) is quickly approaching. We are approaching the third trimester and before we know it summer will be here. In the meantime, with only 4 months left in the school year, it is important to practice certain skills with your child. Some of these are: recognizing and writing their name, letters, numbers, colors, and shape. It is very important to complete homework assignments on time. Please review the topics we discuss in class with your child daily. If you need additional worksheets to practice with your child at home, please feel free to ask.
Below are a few reminders and updates for the month of March. 
· This month we are learning about: Rhyming words (celebrating Dr. Seuss Birthday), health and safety and The Five senses.
· Also we will begin learning how to read the required Preschool sight words (Dolch words). Every other week after your child has mastered recognizing the sight word he/ she will be given a spelling test on the sight words for that week. He/ she will have to be able to write the word after hearing it in a sentence. No more than three words will be given. Further information will be given soon. The sight word list will be taped inside your child’s folder. Please do not remove the list from the folder, please keep it as a reference for your self.
· Math concept- Patterning This week the children will continue to learn the concept of Patterns. The students have enjoyed practicing this skill because it gives order and predictability to activities, and how things in life work together in general. After the concept of patterns is developed, the students can predict that a pattern is something that repeats itself.
· Literature Unit- Happily Ever After This week the children will start Unit 5, of the Happily Ever After Reading Readiness Program. During this unit the children will listen to a collection of jingles, poems, and rhymes. The children will learn many classic rhymes such as”Hey, Diddle, Diddle,” “Hickory, Hickory, Dock,” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” The children will also learn the position words such as in front of, in back of, behind, next to, and between.
· March Family Project due Monday, March 17th: With the class learning about healthy eating habits, the food pyramid, good hygiene, cooking and baking in class, our family project is to make a favorite recipe together. Anything from chocolate chip cookies, or a pasta or rice dish, to banana muffins…anything they wish. After your child chooses their favorite recipe, cook it or bake it with them. Then, once it’s made, get out your camera, and take snapshots of it. The instructions, the baking tools used, and the pictures of the meal are to be displaced on oak tag. Please help your child create a rebus (pictures with words) recipe. PLEASE USE ½ A SHEET OF POSTER BOARD! Thanks!
· Report Card Conferences will be on Friday, March 14th, 2014. Please read the attached memo in sent in your child’s folder.
· Spring Portraits Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 This is an individual photo day. Your child is allowed to dress up for free on that date.
· Homework: Homework is given daily 1-2 sheets are stapled in your child’s homework book. Please remember to bring the book to school daily.

For our curriculum this month, we will discuss Black History Month, St. Valentine's Day, Primary Colors and Love and Friendship. We will also begin learning the addition property. This week the children also begin a new story in the Happily Ever After Story Unit: The Elves and the Shoemaker.
During Catholic Schools week last week, the children enjoyed participating in many different activities. They really enjoyed Blue and Gold as they were able to cheer on many of the students as they participated in activities such as " Tug of War, Basket Ball and the Sneaker/Shoe Race." On Friday the children were excited to meet Ms.Traveso during "Teacher Swap" day. Ms. Traveso is the Pre-K teacher at the other campus. In honor of Catholic Schools Week the children worked with Ms. Traveso to create a collage with pictures representing the verse " An inseparable love for God, each other and learning." from the OLCA mission statement. The children enjoyed this activity and are excited to see their art creations displayed inside their classroom.
Family Project Assignments: February is Black History Month and we will be learning about some famous African-Americans who made a difference. Reading Logs: Are done twice a week (Tues and Thur). Please don’t forget to bring in your books every Friday!
Homework: Homework is done daily. Please make sure your child writes their name on every assignment. It’s good practice for the future. Also, make sure it is done in pencil! Students will receive 1-2 pages daily and every assignment will be paste into your child’s notebook. This week for during class time and homework, the children will focus on the letter Pp and the number 15.
For letter formation, sound and recognition, the children will focus on the letter Pp. The children will learn that an upper case P is formed by writing a long line down and then a little curve up at the top. For the lower case p the children should write a line down, go back to the top make a curved line over and make a bump around.
For the number 15, the children will learn to form the number 15 the children will know that they must form the number 1 and then the number 5. The children will practice counting to the number sixteen, count objects and place them in groups of 15and students will improve on the recognition of the number 15.
Water bottles: Please send a small water bottle with a secure lid that can easily fit into their backpack/ lunch box. The big water bottles often spills and create a big mess Make sure to label it with a permanent maker! We’ve noticed the flip top ones occasionally come off and leak. We strongly recommend a screw top opening.
Behavior Charts: Please make sure to check your child’s behavior chart daily.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH FAMILY PROJECTS
Dear Families,
2/3/14
February is Black History Month and we will be learning about some famous African-Americans who made a difference. This month’s project is to have a discussion with your child about one individual and one thing he/she was known for.
Your child will then present the information by acting out the role of their pioneer. You can choose to use simple props (like an oversized shirt, glasses, hat, etc) and drawing of invention (ex. Rosa Parks = bus, Garrett Morgan = traffic light) that will help bring it to life. You will help your child remember one important fact about the person. On the date of the presentation, each child will present and say “I am _______________ and I am famous for __________________.”
In addition, on a ½ of poster board. Please have 4-5 facts about your child’s black history person. Please follow a rebus format so you child can easily present. Use ½ poster board. Remember to practice the information with your child. ( Please do not cut and paste information from Wikipedia, your child should be able to present all information on the board)!!! Keep it simple and child friendly.

Hello and Welcome back! We’ve missed our Bunnies and are so glad to see everyone again. We hope you all had a wonderful time with your families.December was eventful! We learned about children around the world, holidays celebrated around the world, sorting and Christmas! Thanks for your ongoing support in 2013. I’m confident that our commitment and dedication to our student’s educational growth will continue to increase for the New Year!
As we start 2014, I will be assigning new seats. We will speak to our students about new beginnings and making new friends at their table. As you already know, we have an open communication policy. If you have any questions feel free to email me dblain@olcacdemy.net or write a note. As a reminder, homework will be given daily. Homework is a way to practice skills that are vital to your child’s learning; letting your child do the work themselves (with some assistance) is the best way to reinforce and encourage comprehension. Reading logs are done every Tuesday and Thursday, please remember to return the books every Friday. If you have any questions concerning reading logs, please feel free to ask me. (Book must stay home Monday-Thursday return only on Friday).
Please remember to dress your child in full school uniform every day. If it is a snowy day and your child is wearing rain/snow boots; please remember to pack an additional change of shoes. Please remember to pack extra clothing to be left in the classroom in case of an accident; this includes, pants, shirt, socks, and under garments etc...
Again, I’m truly excited for the New Year. We have a lot of learning activities planned for our students. Thanks again for entrusting us with your child’s education!
This Month we are learning about the Winter season, polar animals, Martin Luther King Jr. and animals habitat in winter. We will also begin our third unit in Happily Ever After La Tortuga.

Winter Cooking Activity:
Snowball Cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup of butter
1/2 cup of powdered sugar
2 1/2 cups of flour
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Powdered sugar to coat cookies
Directions: Mix all ingredients till dough is formed. Take small pieces of dough and roll into small balls. Bake at 325 degrees for 5 to 8 minutes. While still warm, roll cookies in powdered sugar.

Important Reminder:
If your child is sick,( fever, coughing, sneezing, flu like symptoms) please keep him/ her home, if he/ she has a fever please keep your child home for 24 hrs before returning to school. This helps to make them more comfortable, recover quickly, and prevents others from becoming sick as well. Healthy children are eager to learn.

October was a fall blast!!The children enjoyed learning about the Farm, Leaves, Apples and Pumpkins. This month we will discuss the importance of giving thanks, sharing, Native Americans and Pilgrims and the holiday they created together.
A special Thank You to parents who donated a special treat toward our Halloween Celebration, the children had a wonderful time.
Below are a few reminders and updates:
· Morning Snack is NOT provided by the school, please be sure to send with your child NO MORE THAN “2″ items healthy snack EVERY DAY such as: water, juice, milk, fruit (MUST BE CUT in SMALL PIECES), cheese sticks and crackers, goldfish crackers, pretzels, or yogurt, etc. NO JUNK FOOD ALLOWED — CHIPS, Cheese Doodles, CANDIES, SODA!
· Due Date: November 12th: Family Project: This month the students will learn about the importance of giving thanks. On construction paper (Provided) please have your child create a collage of all the things that they are thankful for. This may include: pictures of mom, dad, grandparents, food, home, etc. Please have your child cut at least 15 pictures paste and label all pictures on the construction paper provided.( real family pictures are also accepted and preferred). If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me!

This is two different days.
· Picture Day # 1= Group Picture = November 7th. All students must be in FULL UNIFORM for a class portrait.
· Picture Day #2 = Individual Pictures= November 8th Casual dress allowed for anyone taking pictures. If not, your child must be in full OLCA uniform.
· In Class Halloween Mini Party: We will have a small in class party before dismissal on Thursday, October 31st... We are also asking for treat donations such as Entenmann's brand snacks, chips and juices for the children to enjoy. If you would like to donate a treat item, please bring it in by Wed Oct 30th. Thanks in Advance!!!
· The children will be able to dress in their Halloween costumes. Students are not allowed to wear a mask and weapons are prohibited. Please purchase costumes that are easily accessible/ manageable for restroom breaks.

Dear Parents,
Below are a few reminders!
Behavior – We began utilizing our behavior chart for your viewing and it is placed in the back of your child‘s folder. It is a monthly calendar that we will color according to your child’s behavior to coincide with our classroom behavior apples. Green=great job, Yellow=Try Harder, Red=Needs Improvement Immediately. We will also write a short note in each box (one box per day) to let you know why they received a certain color. Please speak to your child daily about following classroom rules!
Changes of clothing - Always have a change of clothes packed and if we send your child home with a change of clothes, please send back a new change of clothes.
Label all belongings! – Make sure everything has a name (including water bottles).
The constant temperature changes result in children wanting to remove layers and we need to make sure that clothing is labeled in permanent marker or pen since (the sticker labels sweat and peel off) on the inside tag of the clothing.
Homework – Please remember to check your child’s homework book every Mon-Thurs for homework assignments! Homework is a major responsibility of every school student.
Reading logs – Please remember that reading to your child everyday not only builds a stronger bond, it encourages family literacy which leads to a love of learning. Spend 10-15 minutes a day reading with your child. We look at reading logs every Friday so please keep the books home Mon-Thurs. Please return them every Friday.
Family Projects – Are special assignments done once a month that children and parents work on together. Stay tuned for the October assignment as we will let you know what topic it will be.
Sending Money to school – With all the special events, sales, and fundraisers that take place in our school money flows regularly. Please make sure to ALWAYS PUT IT IN A ENVELOPE WITH YOUR CHILD'S NAME, THE AMOUNT, AND THE REASON AND CLASS. (ex: Joe Smith $10 October Snack Money Prek-4). We cannot be held responsible if loose money goes missing.
Changes to pick up routines: please let us know in advance by writing a note, email, and/or phone call so that we can prepare your child. We encourage you to do all three if possible at the earliest convenience!
Parents in school/trips/volunteering: Virtus training today at OLCA-Rockaway Blvd campus 9/25/13. We love parent participation and look forward to having more of it during our classroom events and field trips. In order for this to happen, we must ensure that parents are fully trained and certified. Parents cannot be on the premises or around the children during school hours if they have not gone through the rigorous process to ensure that you are safely able to work with children. The process includes filling out paperwork such as a state mandated criminal background check and completing the Virtus child safety awareness workshop. If you’re interested and want to begin the process, please see our school secretaries in the main office for the required paperwork and sign up for a Virtus training appointment by going to virtus.org and clicking the registration link on the left column. Trips chaperons are appointed by order of completion of the mandated requirements above. We will only accept the first ten parents who have completed the entire process. We will try to accommodate everyone by rotating chaperons.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
This month we are learning about farms, farm animals farm foods, apples, leaves and pumpkins. Please talk about the theme at home with your child on a daily basis. They enjoy sharing the information that was taught to them at school!
Below are a few general reminders and upcoming events for the month of October.
1. As a reminder blankets are sent home every Friday to be washed and returned on Monday. Next week we will not have school on Monday, please remember to bring back the blankets on Tuesday. Thank you!
2. No school on October 14th (Columbus Day).
3. Our Farm Animal Projects wild be due on Monday, October 21stth, 2013. The project is to be displayed on oak tag (preferably white). On Friday the students picked a farm animal out of a hat and the animal that they chose will be the one he/she will gather information about. It is imperative that you assist your child but please do not do the project for him/her. Allow your child to cut the pictures (5-6) for the oak tag. This process will enhance their fine motor skills. Last week we practiced cutting paper. The children really enjoy cutting and singing our cutting song “Open shut them.” Also, a few facts about the farm animal should be included. For example, include the color of the farm animal, how many legs the animal has, what the farm animal eats, if the farm animal produces food, and the name of their offspring (e.g. colt, kitten, etc.) Any other fun facts about the farm animal can be included but let’s try to limit it to about 4-5 facts. If your child can write, please allow your child to write the facts. Remember each student will present their work to the class. Please keep it age appropriate. I know that they are capable of producing great work! Helpful Hint: Please help your child create a rebus format (pictures with words) this website will help you on how to follow a rebus format (www. enchantedlearning.com). If you have any questions regarding the farm animal project, please feel free to ask. (Attached you will find the name of the farm animal your child chose).
4. Throughout the day I realized that the students get really thirsty, especially on our gym day (Tuesday). For lunch please pack an extra drink for your child (water is preferred).
5. Please dress your child in full school uniform: OLCA sweatshirts and OLCA sweatpants! Girl’s hair accessories must match the school uniform (blue or black)
6. We will have a class Halloween party on October 31st at 11:00 pm and a school party 1-4pm at the 128th campus grades (5-8). (More information will soon be given).
7. It is very important to discuss at home with your child the way he/she should behave at school. Please communicate to your child the importance of following directions at school, keeping their hands to themselves, and listening to their teachers. Please work on strengthening these skills with your child at home.
8. As the weather gets chilly outside, please send in an extra sweater for your child just in case we decide to go out for a neighborhood walk.
