Dear Parents,

We can’t believe that our school year is about to come to a close! Here we are at the last day and a half of school for your Pre-Kindergarten! It seems like just yesterday when you were dropping them off for the first time! What amazes us most of all is how your children have grown and matured.

Over the summer vacation, I strongly encourage you to read to your child every day, practice handwriting in both upper and lower case, and practice counting—both by having your child state the numbers aloud and in writing. Doing one or two of these activities each day over the summer vacation will help to keep your child’s skills sharp.

The Queens Public Library will have its Summer Reading Program. It’s a great way to keep your child reading. The reading programs have celebrations, author events, book discussions, craft programs, music programs…and almost everything at the library is free. Find out more in the Events section of summerreading.org. Also, try to visit museums and zoos, too. They can be lots of fun and you get to sneak in some learning too! Summer vacation is too long of a time to go without any study time!

Thank you for being such good parents to your children! It has been a pleasure working with you and I have enjoyed teaching each and every one of your children! May God bless and watch over you and your children this summer and always. We wish you a happy, healthy, and safe summer .

Dear Pre-K 2 Families,

We hope you all enjoyed the festivities of the Culture Fest this weekend!

With the Stepping -Up Ceremony for the Pre-K students quickly approaching, the children have been busy learning their songs and dances.

This week a letter will be sent home asking families to RSVP with the number of guests attending this ceremony. The responses that we receive will be used so that we can plan accordingly.

 

The students continue to practice for the spring show. The show will take place on Wednesday, June 5, at 6; 30 p.m. They are all singing beautifully to the classic song “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. The students are also doing a great deal of movements that will accompany their singing performance.

The children are so excited about their Stepping - Up Ceremony. They have been practicing for a couple of weeks and cannot wait to show their families what they were going to do. Three days out the week the children have been practicing in the gym which is the location of their ceremony. Practicing in the gym will help the children become familiar with their expectations during the actual day of the performance. Some of the songs they are singing have been sung throughout the school year so the children are familiar with them and are comfortable singing them together.

After completing the ten units of this program, and with your support and encouragement, you child will have the foundation to progress Happily Ever After!

This week the children will continue to improve on their letter recognition and writing skills as they practice writing the letter Pp, learn Pp words and practice writing letter Pp words.

During math, they will also continue to learn the concept of Patterns. The students have enjoyed practicing this skill because it gives order and predictability to activities, and how things in life work together in general. After the concept of patterns is developed, the students can predict that a pattern is something that repeats itself.

This week the children will learn about Memorial Day. They will learn that it is a time to stop and remember why we, as Americans, are able to enjoy the freedom we do. They will learn that there have been men and women willing to sacrifice their lives so that we can be free. The class will also discuss that it is also a celebration of life, a time when thank and remember all of the fallen soldiers. The children will discuss any events they have planned such as a family barbecue or family trip.

Every day the students continue to practice singing the songs for their Stepping -Up- ceremony. Three days out the week the children have been practicing in the gym which is the location of their ceremony. Practicing in the gym will help the children become familiar with their expectations during the actual day of the performance. Spirit Week May 20 to May 24- This is a full week of fun activities to support the 8th grade graduating class! Five themed Dress Down Days in one week for $10.

Monday, May 20 - Culture Day- Students will be able to dress in either traditional clothing representative of their country or wear clothing that represents the colors of their country’s flag. Students may bring in food to share with their classmates that represent their heritage.

Tuesday, May 21,- Cartoon Day- Students May dress down and wear clothing that represents their favorite cartoon character, video game character, or other characters they enjoy to see when watching cartoons.

Wednesday, May 22- Twin Day- Students will coordinate with two or three classmates and dress alike. Students will coordinate with their classmates.

Celebrate May the Month of Mary

Dear Parents,

During the first week of May, the children participated in a grass growing experiment. Each student filled a small flower pot with soil and then added 2 spoonful’s of grass seeds. Then the students watered the soil using a water bottle. After a few days, they were excited to observe how quickly the grass grew and were happy to partake in this simple and fun activity. Every day the students observed new seeds sprouting as the other grass grew taller. The grass was used as part of their mother’s day gifts.

The students are soon coming to the end of their current school year and in honor of the time we have spent together, we will celebrate with a fun, simple, but very memorable stepping up ceremony.

They have also spent a couple of days practicing the songs for their families. Some of the songs they are singing have been sung throughout the school year so the children are familiar with them and are comfortable singing them together.

Ascension of the Lord

Dear Parents,

On Friday the students loved learning in their pajamas. The students were excited to wear their comfortable pajamas to school. They also enjoyed participating in story time with the 3rd grade students. During the story time event, the students in Mrs. Halbert’s class were eager to read to the children. All of the children enjoyed listening to them read and hope to become great readers like them one day.

This week during Happily Ever After, the students will continue to listen to the story Peter and the Wolf. This classic story tells how Peter and his animal friends outsmart a wolf. During this unit the children will learn to recognize the letters U,u V,v and W, w. They will also learn to recognize the color white, the shape triangle and understand the term of the word More.

 

This week the children will continue to improve on their letter recognition and writing skills as they practice writing the letter M, m, learn M,m words and practice writing letter M, m words.

 

This week the children will continue to improve on their visual discrimination as they complete activities of “Things that go together.” These activities will help the children to learn and practice their ability to recognize things that go together. Check out our selection of worksheets that are designed to help kids learn and practice their ability to recognize things that go together. This is an important skill for young children to learn and these are perfect preschool and kindergarten worksheets. The students will also learn to sort and classify objects. The children will learn to organize items into groups based on common characteristiv such as size, color, shape, texture.

We are pleased to announce that the children will participate in the Spring Show. The show will take place on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 6:30. The children will sing the classic song “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. On Friday the children listened to the beautiful story “What a wonderful world” which has pictures to accompany the lyrics to the song. What a wonderful world!

Dear Parents,

This week the children will be introduced to a new story from the Happily Ever After Reading Readiness Program. In Unit 9, the children will listen to the popular musical tale Peter and the Wolf. This classic story tells how Peter and his animal friends outsmart a wolf. During this unit the children will learn to recognize the letters U,u V,v and W, w. They will also learn to recognize the color white, the shape triangle and understand the term of the word More.

This week the children will continue to improve on their letter recognition and writing skills as they practice writing the letter L l, learn Ll words and practice writing letter L l words.

This week the children will improve on their Visual Discrimination skills through many activities and homework assignments. For children, much of how they learn is through visual observation. Also, every book or walk is an adventure, as they take in the variety of shapes, colors, people, and animals they encounter. Having strong visual discrimination skills enables children to observe details in their environment.

Visual discrimination is the ability to recognize details in visual images. It allows the children to identify the size, shape or form, color and position of objects and printed material. Visual discrimination skills will also enable the children to identify likenesses and differences between specific images.

We have had the pleasure of sharing your child’s growth and development over the past year. We are truly honored to have spent these precious moments with your children and would like to celebrate this special time.

This is an exciting time and milestone for the children as they are preparing to enter into Kindergarten.

To celebrate, we would like to invite you and your family to participate in their Stepping -Up Ceremony.

It won’t be much longer until it is time for their Stepping -Up Ceremony. As the children finish up the curriculum and prepare for their celebration, we would like to ask you for your support in making this event a success. A required Graduation fee of $40.00 is needed to help cover the cost of supplies for this event.

Please remember the Graduation fee will be used exclusively for your child’s celebration. We are requesting that the graduation fee be submitted no later than, Monday May 13, 2013 so there is ample time to order the supplies needed.

Dear Parents,

This week the children will be introduced to a new story from the Happily Ever After Reading Readiness Program. In Unit 8, the children will listen to the African folktale, titled The Tug of War. This story is about a clever turtle that outsmarts an elephant and a hippopotamus. Your child will learn the terms wide, thin, up and down. They will also learn the terms above and below. The reading unit suggests some activities that can be done at home to reinforce the concepts of wide, thin, up, down, above and below. One activity states the following: Look through pictures in magazines, books or on the internet about animals. Talk about the animals in the pictures using the terms wide, thin, up, down, above and below. Explain that some animals are wide and some are thin. Then have your child cut out pictures of animals. Then call out directions such as “hold the lion up toward the ceiling” and “hold the bird down towards the floor.” Have your child draw an orange path on a sheet of paper and place some animals above the path and others below the path.

Dear Parents,

The children were excited to be at school! They all resumed quickly to their classroom routines and were eager to begin learning new concepts.

During the morning meeting time on Monday, the students shared stories of one of their specials during Easter break. The children drew pictures of one of their favorite moments during their Easter break. Once the children completed their drawings, they were asked to describe it. To label their picture, the children traced the words they stated to describe their event. The children improved on their fine motor skills as they traced the words.

This week the children will be introduced to the Mood Meter Poster that was developed by the Health, Emotion, and Behavior Laboratory at Yale University. This approach was developed to introduce the emotional literacy skill in children. Every morning the children will plot their moods on the mood meter. This approach will help the children to manage their behavior and create more respectful classroom experiences and positive relationships. Every student will have a Popsicle stick with their name on it and part of their morning routine they will place in the square to show how they are feeling that day.

 

This week the children will continue to improve on their letter recognition and writing skills as they practice writing the letter I i, learn Ii words and practice writing letter Ii words.

 

During math, the children will continue to review their counting skills up to the number 20. The will also improve on their number recognition as well as writing the numeral to represent the amount counted.

In honor of Easter, the children will continue to discuss that Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s rising from the dead (His Resurrection) after His crucifixion which took place on Good Friday. The children will also learn that it is celebrated on a Sunday during the spring season. Last week, the children did not complete their Easter baskets. Therefore this week, they will improve on their writing as they write “Happy Easter” on their baskets. The children will then decorate their very own Easter Basket and fill them with treats!

This week the children will continue to improve on their letter recognition and writing skills as they practice writing the letter Gg, learn Gg words and practice writing letter Gg words.

During math, the children will continue to review their shape recognition and practice drawing shapes on their own.

The children have started discussing the topic of Left and Right. This topic was introduced in the Happily Ever After story unit 6, titled: The Nightingale.Enhancing children’s Right and Left discrimination is one of the most important parts of learning. This is important because children must learn left and right in order for them to know how to read books and follow directions.

During class the children will participate in activities to practice learning to differentiate the left side and right side. One example of this is when the children say the Pledge of Allegiance. As they recite the pledge, they place their right hand over their heart which reinforces the right side.

In honor of Easter, the children will learn that it is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s rising from the dead (His Resurrection) after His crucifixion which took place on Good Friday. The children will also learn that it is celebrated on a Sunday during the spring season. They will also decorate their very own Easter Basket and fill them with treats!

On Friday, March 22, Parent Teacher Conferences will take place. A letter will be sent home giving parents the option to indicate the time period that would be most convenient for you; Friday afternoon or Friday evening. Once your preferred time period is received, a scheduled time will be sent home for you. If the scheduled time and day does not work, I will work around that to accommodate you. I am looking forward to showing you some great work and to talk about the progress that is happening here.

During math, the children will improve on their shape recognition as well as practice drawing the shapes: oval, diamond, and heart. Learning how to draw shapes on their own is important for the students because it is the precursor to learning how to write. This will also help them with identifying and writing letters because letters are made of shapes.

In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, the children will learn aboutSaint Patrick. The children will learn that Saint Patrick wanted to go to the country of Ireland to tell people about God. Saint Patrick told the people of Ireland that there was one God and three divine Persons: The Father, The Son, and Holy Spirit. Saint Patrick picked up a green shamrock and used the three green leaves to represent the three persons of one God: The Father, The Son, and Holy Spirit.

During the Happily Ever After Reading Readiness Program, the students have been introduced to Unit 6. This unit is titled the Nightingale. In this unit the children will listen to the tale, The Nightingale, by Hans Christian Andersen. In the story, the Emperor longs to hear the beautiful song of the nightingale, but when the nightingale flees the palace to return to the forest, the Emperor receives a mechanical nightingale. The mechanical bird cannot take the place of the real nightingale. The emperor becomes sick as he wishes to hear the songs of the real nightingale. One day the real nightingale returns. The emperor listens to songs of the nightingale and becomes well again. The children will also learn many important concepts such as left, right, first, next, last and the color black.

On Tuesday, they were excited to have Ms. Fenton as their teacher for the morning part of the day. They participated in a language-arts and art activity in correlation to Our Lady’s Catholic Academy’s Mission Statement, as they created their own Mission Statement Books.

During Thursday’s Blue and Gold Day, the children participated in many activities. They were excited to race with the other Pre-K class as they completed the Potato Sack Jump, The Egg on a Spoon Balance and the Tug of War/Rope.

During Friday’s Bishop Mass, they had the honor to meet Bishop Cisneros whom is the Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn. The students also viewed video presentations created by the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. They also listened to the wonderful acapella singing of the OLCA chorus.

This week Our Lady’s Catholic Academy celebrates Catholic Schools Week from January 27- February 2, 2013. There are many exciting events taking place at the school. These events and dates have been listed below.

The Students are enjoying listening to The Elves and the Shoemaker. In addition to learning all the concepts listed in last week’s posting, several other concepts we will introduced and reviewed to the children. The following is a list of more instructional goals:

— Students will develop an understanding that there are different types of shoes that people wear.

— Students will develop an understanding of the different uses of a shoe and I will explain how shoes vary.

— Students will understand that shoes serve a function (protection, sports and decoration).

— Students will create shoes using various art materials.

— Students will develop an understanding of how to lace a shoe.

— Students will use the print in their environment as well as emergent writing to write a sentence about the shoes they have created.

This week your child will start the fourth unit of the Happily Ever After reading readiness program. During this unit the children will listen to the classic tale of The Elves and the Shoemaker. Your child will create a story book and us the story book to retell the story. The children will review the color green in this unit and the letters G,g,H. and h. They will also learn the meaning of the words top, middle, and bottom; and the concept that parts make up a whole. To reinforce these ideas, you could cut out pictures fromt magazines and then cut each picture into three pieces, the top, middle, and bottom. Have your child put the pieces together to form a whole. At the end of this unit your child will bring home a story book they created. Keep the story books with the other storybooks your child has created and brought home. Have your child retell the stories to you and the family while you also enjoy the colorful, detailed illustrations.

Dear Parents,

The students enjoyed listening to the story La Tortuga which is about a turtle that plays the Flute. The students then listened to the story: Jabuti the Tortoise: A Trickster Tale from the Amazon. In this story, the turtle also played the Flute. The students compared and contrasted the two stories. Next they voted on the turtle character they liked the most and then created a paper bag puppet. The students used the puppets to act out the stories. On Thursday, they all enjoyed eating “Chocolate Turtles.” During music and movement on Friday, the students were excited to create their Flute. The students then listened to flute music as they explored with different sounds as they blew into their self- created flutes.

This week the students will continue to focus on the story unit La Tortuga and participate in many activities related to the story. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr the students will learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all of his efforts to make the world a better place.

Your child has begun the third unit of the Happily Ever After Reading Readiness program. In this unit your child will listen to the Mexican tale LaTortuga. The title is Spanish for “The Turtle.” Your child will learn the terms round, around, in, and on. and to identify the color yellow. He or she will also learn to tell soft sounds from loud sound and to identify and draw circles. At the end of the unit your child will bring home all of the activities they have completed.

In this unit the children will learn facts about turtles and participate in a taste test of Turtle pie. On Friday, the children will observe the Flute instrument and then create one on their own.

They will learn to compare the sizes of objects and pictures and use the words big, medium, and little to describe them. The will also learn about the color blue, how to group together things that are the same, and what the word over means.

Report Card Conferences will be on Friday, December 14, during the times of 1-3 Pm and 5:30 -7:30 PM. I will have a sign-in sheet outside of the classroom. As parents arrive they will sign-in their name and time. The sign in sheet will be followed to meet with the parents accordingly.

In unit 1 the children listened to the folktale Little Red Riding Hood. On Friday, the children brought home a folder containing all of their self created story book and activity pages. Enclosed in the folder is a letter detailing all of the concepts your children have learned. Please find a special place to keep your child’s storybook and activity pages. • Lunch Payments for the week of October 29, will be honored for the week of November 5. Since there was not lunch planned for Wednesday (10/ 31) and Thursday (11/1) of last week, the school will sell pizza on Wednesday (11/7) and Thursday (11/ 8). A special order form will go home on Monday.
