Greeting Parents,

This month we are learning about and the life cycle of a butterfly, dinosaurs, our heritage, and community helpers! We will review addition property and will continue to learn subtraction. We will also complete the story unit: The City Mouse and the Country Mouse and they will continue to review the skill of learning the difference between left and right.

Below are few reminders and upcoming events:

Classroom Basket Raffle: The excitement is building up for our Culture Fest Fundraiser!!!

Each class will be sponsoring a themed gift basket for the Class Basket Raffle. Our theme is Crayola, so all items we are requesting are related to any Crayola Product. A sign-up sheet has been placed outside the classroom. Please kindly take a moment to sign-up for the items you’d like to contribute. Please remember to write your child’s next to the item you wish to purchase so items are not duplicated. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Thanks in advance for your contributions!!!

Family Project: Your child will create a culture collage on oak tag paper. It should show where your family comes from. Please include your country or countries flag(s), pictures, landmarks, food and any other information you might want to share. Please allow your child to write the facts and cut out the pictures. As always if you have any questions, feel free to email me. This is our last project for the school year (AWWWWW), so enjoy it and have fun with your child, as they explore their heritage. Project due date: May 15^th NO Make-Ups!!!

Behavior: Please speak to your child about appropriate classroom behaviors. We are still following our behavior chart policy. If your child receives a yellow or a red check on his/ her folder, he/she will not receive treasure chest on Friday. Kindly review classroom rules with your child daily.

Sight Words Spelling Test: Please practice writing the following words with your child: help, here, I, in, is, it. Our sight words spelling test will be on Fri May 3^rd.

We will have a five senses and money quiz next week Thursday May 9^th. The quiz will consist of the difference between dollars, cents, or the number 1, writing the name of each coin, and drawing a line to show which sense you use for each item. Please review all past homework on related topics.

Reminders:

Uniforms: Since the weather will vary between rainy, hot, and sunny we ask that you dress your child in light layers that can easily be removed or added to depending on the child’s comfort level. We encourage everyone to adhere to the following during this spring and summer season: Light jacket, OLCA sweater, OLCA sweatpants, OLCA t-shirt, and Velcro sneakers. Mr. Coyne will notify parents when students are allowed to wear the OLCA shorts and tee-shirts.

Changes of clothing - Always have a change of clothes packed and if we send your child home with a change of clothes, please send back a new change of clothes. They should include a pair of socks, a pair of underwear, a t-shirt, and pants.

Lateness: Lateness is a big distraction during our morning routine. School starts PROMTLY AT 8:15am .If your child is late, please see Ms. Roberts or Mrs. Belen for a late pass.

Absences: Please remember that any day off you take from school requires a note. You can hand write a note or get a formal excuse note from the doctor. Please make sure to bring one in the day you come back to school. If your child is sick, please keep him/ her home, if he/ she has a fever please keep your child home for 24 hrs before returning to school.

Missing Items: Weekly: Reading Logs (bring in on Fri). Many of our students are not completing their reading logs. Please make sure that your child is logging the stories they’ve read every Tuesday and Thursday.

Important Information :STEP- Up Ceremony

Dear Parents,

We have had the pleasure of sharing your child’s growth and development over the past year. We are truly honored to have spent these precious moments with your children and would like to celebrate this special time.

This is an exciting time and milestone for the children as they are preparing to enter into Kindergarten.

To celebrate, we would like to invite you and your family to participate in their Stepping -Up Ceremony.

It won’t be much longer until it is time for their Stepping -Up Ceremony. As the children finish up the curriculum and prepare for their celebration, we would like to ask you for your support in making this event a success. A required Graduation fee of $40.00 is needed to help cover the cost of supplies for this event.

Please remember the Graduation fee will be used exclusively for your child’s celebration. We are requesting that the graduation fee be submitted no later than, Monday May 13, 2013 so there is ample time to order the supplies needed.

Because we are having a celebration, we ask that you dress your child in nice clothing for the event. However, please remember that it is very warm in the gym in June. Consequently we suggest that the children wear sundresses, short sleeve shirts with a tie, or similar items.

The program will include songs that we have sung all year, as well as some new songs that we are just learning for the occasion. We may send home some material for you to practice with your child – more details on that will follow.

As the year winds down, we both want to take the opportunity to truly thank you for all of your support and hard work throughout the course of the year. We have grown to love each of the children and it has truly been an honor to teach them.

Classroom Garden Party Mon April 22^nd. This event is especially for the children only as a culmination of our plant studies. The children April projects were absolutely amazing!!! Please check out our secured picture website by the end of this week. Our final family project will be given at the end of this month. The project due date: TBA

This week your child will start the sixth unit of Happily Ever After: The Nightingale. Also, we will discuss the food pyramid. Below are a few reminders:

Absences: Please remember that any day off you take from school requires a note. You can hand write a note or get a formal excuse note from the doctor. Please make sure to bring one in the day your child returns to school. If your child is sick, please keep him/ her home, if he/ she have a fever, coughing, sneezing, or flu like symptoms; please treat your child’s sickness before returning him/her to school. In any of these cases occur a clearance from the doctor must be given. It is very important that we keep our peers free of sickness so please be mindful.

Report Card: If you have not already done so, please come in and sign- up for report cards. A sign- up sheet is taped to my desk. Report cards will be distributed this Friday March 22^nd, please stop in before Friday Mach 22^nd

March Project: March Family Project due April 4^th with the class learning about healthy eating habits, the food pyramid, cooking and baking. Our family project is to have your child make their favorite recipe. Anything from chocolate chip cookies, pasta, rice dish, to banana muffins… anything they wish. After your child chooses their favorite recipe, cook it or bake it with them. In the process, get out your camera, and take snapshots of it. The Dolphins will learn that every recipe calls for baking tools, ingredients, and directions. The instructions, baking tools used, and the pictures of the meal are to be displayed on oak tag. Cooking is a skill that helps children read, do math and organize their work logically. Please help your child create a REBUS PRESENTATION (pictures with words) recipe. This month we are studying rhyming words, five senses, money and the food pyramid.

Happily Ever After: Today we began our fifth unit Jingles, Poems and Rhymes.

Below are a few reminders:

Missing Items: We’ve noticed that some of the children are missing important items.

Daily: Homework Books, Behavior Folders.

Weekly: Reading Logs (bring in on Fri)

Reading Logs: Are done twice a week (Tues and Thur). Please don’t forget to bring in your books every Friday!

Homework: Homework is Mon-Thurs. Even if you have a special event planned with your family, homework should be a high priority and should be completed. Please make sure your child writes their name on every assignment. It’s good practice for the future. Also, make sure it is done in pencil!

Blue Folders: Please make sure that your child has it in their backpack everyday! Also look inside for any work your child has done or notes that might be sent home.

Sight Words Spelling Test: We will have a bi-weekly sight words spelling test. Attached in your child’s folder you will find a complete dolch preschool sight words list. Please review these words daily with your child. These words will be reviewed in class in Alphabetical Order. Practice reading, finding, and writing these words with your child.

Class Pictures: I will be uploading our class pictures to our secure website later on this week below are the steps.

Catholic Schools Week was a blast! This month we are learning about Black History Month, Love and Friendship, and St. Valentine. Please carefully review the information below!

February Family Projects: Since February is Black History Month, we will be discussing famous African Americans and their contributions to history and society. Please review the assignment/due date listings. I really look forward to seeing the creativity and information you assist your child with! This will be a great role playing presentation. Please use ½ oak tag for this presentation. Remember to follow a rebus format, which means keep the presentation very simply with 4-5 facts and with at least 5 pictures.

Valentine’s Day Party: We will have a small Valentine’s Day party On February 14^th, 2013! If you wish to donate a small treat for this event, (i.e. chips, cookies, chocolate etc…), it would be greatly appreciated.

Happily Ever After: The children really enjoyed unit two The Three Bears. This week we began our third unit La Torgua. Please remember to practice cutting at home with your child.

Uniform: All students in the Pre-K class must be full GYM UNIFORM at all times. This means OLCA GYM UNIFORM / WITH SNEAKERS. Girls are not allowed to wear nail polish or hoop earrings. All girls’ hair accessories must be black or blue. Please review the OLCA student’s handbook for further details.

Lateness/Absences: Please make sure you get a late pass if you are late. If your child is absent please send in either a doctor’s note or a hand written one explaining the reason why your child is out.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH FAMILY PROJECTS

Dear Families,

February is Black History Month and we will be learning about some famous African-Americans who made a difference. This month’s project is to have a discussion with your child about one individual and one thing he/she was known for. We wrote up some names and the children pulled them out of a hat.

Your child will then present the information by acting out the role of their pioneer. You can choose to use simple props (like an oversized shirt, glasses, hat, etc) and drawing of invention (ex. Rosa Parks = bus, Garrett Morgan = traffic light) that will help bring it to life. You will help your child remember one important fact about the person. On the date of the presentation, each child will present and say “I am _______________ and I am famous for __________________.”

Please use ½ oak tag for this presentation. Remember to follow a rebus format, which means keep the presentation very simply with 4-5 facts and with at least 5 pictures.

Hello and Welcome back! We’ve missed our Dolphins and are so glad to see everyone again. We hope you all had a wonderful time with your families. A special Thank You to all of our parents, your thoughtful gift for Christmas was greatly appreciated!!!

This month the children will discuss the winter season, arctic animals, hibernation, migration and adaptation. We will also begin our wonderful literacy curriculum: Happily Ever After a reading readiness program. The students will enjoy listening to ten great stories, followed by enriched activity pages. At the end of every story your child’s work will be sent home for your viewing. We will continue to practice writing letters and number, addition and sight words. Our next family project will be due in February; further info will be given later on this month.

A few reminders:
Lateness: School starts at 8:15am; please make sure to bring your child to school on time. We want to minimize the interruptions as much as possible in the morning, as it is a difficult transition for some of our students. So please be mindful of your child’s tardiness. Dismissal is at 3:00pm.

Greetings Families!!!

Below we have new information for the month of December and a few reminders!!!

This month we are learning about children around the world, holidays celebrated around the world, and Christmas.

December Family Projects Due Tues Dec 12: Since we are learning about children around the world and the holidays they celebrate around the world this season, we will be having the children research different holidays and cultural customs. The children will randomly draw topic names from a bag. Please check your child’s folder as we will send out the assignment list next week. Please display project on WHITE OAK TAG!!! Further information will be given!!

Christmas Kringle Fri Dec 21 – Next week you will also receive a slip with the name of the friend your child will be giving a gift to for Christmas. The children will randomly draw names from a bag. Please check your child’s folder as we send out the assignment list next week. Please bring the gift before Dec 19^th. Remember to keep it a secret! Please spend no more than $10 on a gift!!!

Christmas Party: We will have an In-Class Christmas Celebration Fri Dec 21 9:30-10:30am: Families are cordially invited to join us. If you wish to attend this event, please let me know by Mon Dec 17^th. Lite refreshments will be served.

Dear Families,

Hope everyone is doing well! As you may know already, many of our families and our community was greatly affected by the Hurricane. If you have a any school supplies that you wish to donate , please feel to do so. They can be dropped off in the auditorium of either campus. We will continue to keep these people in our prayers.

This month we are learning about giving thanks, sharing ,Native Americans and Pilgrims and the holiday they created together.

Family Projects- This month family project will consist of the children creating a collage ( 15- 20 pictures ) of all the things that they are thankful for . They can cut out these pictures from magazines, or the internet. Students will then , paste these pictures on construction paper (construction paper will be provided) . Please help your child label all items they listed. This project will be due on November 13th , 2012.

Sending in $ to School = All money must be in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, amount and purpose written on it. Please place this envelope into your child’s behavior chart folder. Please remind your child not to touch this envelope or remove it from the folder.

MATS: All mats are to be washed and returned EVERY MONDAY!!!!!

School Calendar: Please remember to review the school calendar and our school website daily for upcoming events and school updates.

Picture Day: Picture day has been postponed due to the recent hurricane. Further details will be given soon. Please feel free to send in your child’s picture day money.

Sickness: Sickness is common in preschool and we ask that in order to prevent other children and staff from getting sick, you must keep your child at home if they are sick. If your child is running a fever , please keep your child home for 24 hrs. When your child return, you must bring a note to school. As the weather is changing, please remember to pack an extra sweater or jacket for your child.

Classroom Thanksgiving Celebration = On Wednesday November 21st , we will have a Thanksgiving celebration at 9:30 am. Families are invited to come to our Thanksgiving celebration light refreshments will be served.

Dear Families,

Last week the students learned about different types of leaves. This week we are learning about parts of a pumpkin and how they grow.

In Class All Halloween Mini Party: The children will be able to dress in their costumes. Students are not allowed to wear a mask and weapons are prohibited .We will have a small in class party in the morning on Thursday October 31st. We are also asking for treat donations such as Entenmann’s brand snacks, chips and juices for the children to enjoy. If you would like to donate a treat item, please bring it in by October 30th
Please return the permission slip for the Haunted House and $1.00 if you would like your child to walk through this event.

Homework: Please remember that all writing is to be done in pencil. This week letter of the week is : Ff. Number of the week: 5

Reading Logs – Please continue to do them every Tues and Thurs so that we can check them every Fri.

Classroom Rules- Our behavior charts are working well. With such a large class we must create rules and routines to maintain a smoothly run day. Please remind your child to follow classroom rules, listen to their teachers, and to keep their hands to them self.

• ½ Day Dismissal : October 31st / Halloween Party
• Picture Days: This is two different days.
• Picture Day # 1 = Class Picture = November 6th. All students must be in full OLCA uniform for a class portrait. (Girl’s hair accessories must match the uniform).

This week we are learning about leaves! Our children really enjoy learning about the fall season! Today they presented their farm projects. As part of our leaves unit, I ask that every child go on a leaf hunt. Please gather leaves with your child, place them in a Ziploc bag ,with your child’s name on it. Please have the leaves in by this Thursday! We will identify the leaves based on their color, shape sand size.

Below are a few reminders:

• Please remember to keep your child’s reading log notebook at home Monday-Thursday! All reading logs books must be returned on Friday!!!
• Please practice tying laces with your child at home. This is a great fine motor activity!
• Please remember to bring in your child’ blanket every Monday.
• Please remember to check and remove all items from your child’s folder daily.
• We will go on unannounced neighborhood walks, please dress your child accordingly. Always remember, to have a sweater or jacket available for your child.
• Our Halloween party will be on October 31st, all students are allowed to dress up in costumes. I am asking every parent for a small party donation. I will create a party list with the item I am asking your child to bring in. Please keep an eye out for that information, it will be given soon.

Dear Families,

• As you may already know, this week we are learning about apples. Tomorrow I will be sending home a sheet on How Do Apples Grow? Please assist your child with this sheet , but allow your child to cut the pictures out. After completing the sheet , please place it back into your child’s folder. This homework will be due on Monday, October 15th.

• Every child is required to bring in an apple to school tomorrow 10/12/2012. The students will partake in an apple dipping activity. Thanks in advance

Dear Families,

Hope all is well! Below are a few reminders and new information for this week!

• Arrival: Please remember that school begins promptly at 8:15am. All children will be in the Kindergarten classroom by 7:45am. I will pick the Pre- K students up every morning by 8:05am in the Kindergarten classroom.

• Labeling: Please remember to label all of your child’s belongings (coat, lunch box, sweatshirt, umbrella etc…)

• Schoolwork: New York State Common Core Learning Standards: These are new regulations that will be implemented into schools statewide. The class work, homework and reading logs we do align with these and will help prepare your child for school for these changes. Currently, we teach your children skills that are one grade level ahead in order to have them fully prepared for the new curriculum and learning standards that they must complete. OLCA works to prepare its children for the 21st century and you must encourage your child to do the work that is required. If your child has educational needs please speak to me privately regarding this matter.

• Lesson of the Week:* We will be studying apples. Students will taste test different apples, go on neighborhood walk to the supermarket, and I ask that every child to please bring an apple to school by this Thursday 10/11/2012. Also we are practicing the letter D, d this week. Some children will be tracing the letter while others are ready to write it on their own. Please encourage these lessons by pointing out related ideas like going on letter hunts at home.

• Reading Logs and Homework: Reading Logs will now be done twice a week every Tues and Thurs and homework will continue to be 1-3 page only every Mon-Thur.

• Project Ideas: These special assignments will be assigned month on certain months and will be in your child’s folder. These assignments are projects that children do with limited parental assistance. Please allow your child to do all the illustrating, crafting and writing they can do. You may assist with writing out full descriptions if it is in the instructions. A good research project style for your child is a rebus. It is an emergent reader story using simple pictures or illustrations and a few words for instructions or small sentences Example of rebus:http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Humptyrhyme.html

• Farm animal projects: Projects are due next week Tuesday -10/16/2012.If you have any questions regarding the project, please feel free to ask me!

• Halloween: Students can dress up in costumes! A final date and time has not been set yet for our Halloween party (TBA).

• Money: If you send money to school please put it in a sealed and labeled envelope with your child’s name, amount, and purpose written on it then place the envelope in your child’s folder.
