May the miracle of Christmas fill your hearts with warmth and love!
Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

Expository Writing Essay

The fifth grade will be working on the fundamentals of expository essay writing. The students will learn how to explain or inform an audience about a scientific topic of their choosing. The students will be asked to selected from the following topics to correspond with our current studies in science:

  • Earthquakes (This can be about earthquakes in general of a specific earthquake)
  • Volcanoes
  • Continental Drift
  • Pangaea
  • Plate Tectonics
  • The Ice Age

The essay will be researched, planned, organized, and written during class time. I am asking the students to prepare by printing out articles from the Internet, finding magazine or newspaper articles, or bringing in library books. I will have resources available, but it would be more beneficial for the students to have their own for a variety of sources. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at dmccann@olcacademy.net or send me a note. Thank you in advance for all your help!

    Hi Miss McCann:
We read above that the Reading Logs will be collected on October 1st. Have they been given out to the kids yet? Do the kids include all reading material on the logs…not just books, but magazine & news articles, and reading comprehension such as the one assigned in tonight’s homework? Thank you.

    • Ms. McCann says:

Reading logs for September will be done in class. The students have been practicing how to choose “just-right book” using books in our library. The purpose of the reading log is to get students reading. This could range from a newspaper to a novel to a recipe. Each log will be different and I look forward to seeing different genres that the class prefers.

Check out Pizza Hut’s Book It Program at http://www.bookitprogram.com/. We’ll be using this as a bit of an incentive to get students reading and recording!

The class will be receiving their first official log during the first week in October!

Thanks for comment and please let me know if you have any additional questions, comments or suggestions!
