Welcome back! Hope everyone had a relaxing break. We are now in the “home stretch” for Kindergarten. As we prepare to enter 1st grade, you will notice a few new changes.

 

SUPERKIDS UPDATE

Students will receive their final workbook for the next Superkids program: SUPERKIDS CLUB. Your child will be introduced to the remaining letters and sounds of the alphabet and will be able to read at least 5 sentences of a story fluently by themselves at the conclusion of this program.

 

Beginning this week, students will be required to hand in weekly book reports. The format will be sent home on Mondays and it will be due back on Fridays. At this age, children should be reading simple story books. Since they have discovered how to blend sounds together to make words, I ask that you have your child try to sound out a word first, before telling them how to say it. All book reports should be written by the student, with the help of spelling from the parent. It is also acceptable for your child to phonetically spell the words in their report as well. Please do not complete the reports for them. Thank you for your cooperation in regards to this matter.

 

Each week, 10 words will go home that will include both Spelling and Memory words. Students will review these words throughout the week and will be assessed on them every Friday. A different date will be scheduled if there is no school on a Friday.

Good afternoon I hope everyone is having a good Palm Sunday and enjoying their Sunday afternoon. Here are a few reminders for the upcoming week and the Easter Break.

• Easter Break Package went home on Friday. It is due back April 5th.

 

• Tuesday March 22nd is a half day of school and report cards will be going home in the morning with your child. Parent teacher conferences will take place between 3pm and 7pm. Attendance at the conference is optional unless you wish to discuss further.

 

• March 23rd Easter Recess begins, classes resume April 4th, 2016.

 

• As the weather gets warmer you may wish to consider sending your child with an extra bottle of water so that they stay hydrated during the day. Please make sure that your child’s name is on the bottle as they all look the same.

Friday, March 18th, marks the end of the 2nd Trimester. A letter with appointment times will be sent home on Monday for Report Card Conferences (Scheduled for Tuesday, March 22nd). Kindly choose a time slot and return to school by Thursday, March 17th. Thank you.

 

• Literacy: We have been introduced to our newest Superkid Hot Rod. We have been identifying capital and lower case Hh, identifying rhyming words, discussing car parts, things with wheels and racing. Handwriting; Form Hh, Spelling; Encode letters for sounds and encode words. Discuss Sharing. We will have our assessment on Wednesday.
• Math: we continue learning to add and subtract numbers up to 20 and we will be working on solving more word problems. We will be having Chapter 7 assessment on Thursday.
• Easter homework package will be going out this coming Friday 3/18. There will also be a project to be done over the vacation due on April 5th.
• Thank you to everyone that sent in coins for our donation to St. Judes childrens hospital. We will be sending out our donation the first week of April.

Week of 2/29/2016

Reminder: Early dismissal Friday March 4th

Dear families,

The children have been making great progress and learning so much using their tablets. They are currently working on solving word problems and listening to stories and the use of earphones would make this so much more productive. We are asking that if possible please send in a set of ear phones for your child to use in school.

If you are going to send earphones for your child please buy something that is inexpensive, they are available at your local dollar store, Amazon or EBay for about $2.00. Also, put your child’s names on the ear phones using a white label around the cord.

As always your enthusiasm towards your child’s learning is greatly appreciated.

In recognition of the Jubilee Year of Mercy and the Lenten Season we will be learning about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their everyday material and physical needs.

Kindergarten has been discussing this and the children have agreed to make get well cards for the children in one of our local hospitals. Additionally we are having a penny harvest where we will be savings our coins during the month and sending a donation from our class to St Jude’s Children’s hospital. Many of the children’s have already generously been bringing in their coins so we are off to a great start!

 

Our 100 day of school celebration was a great success the children celebrated all of the things that they learned during the first 100 days of Kindergarten with a grand celebration. Thank you for sending in so many goodies.

Thank you to everyone for your kind support to our bake sale which was a huge success.

Superkids:

This week we will be introducing our newest Superkid Ettabetta. EttaBetta likes to play and do puzzles. We will identify capital and lowercase Ee and associate Ee with /e/. We will continue to work on recognizing that words are made up of letters, associate picture names with initial /e/. We will also understand the meanings of exercises, excellent, entertaining, educational and address.

Math: we are continuing working on our addition and subtraction skills additionally we will be counting and writing, problem solving and comparing numbers to 20.

Dear Families,

Next Wednesday 2/3/16 will be career day at OLCA and we will be hosting Parent Classroom visits between 9:00 – 10:00am . In class we have been talking about various careers and what the children want to be when they grow up.

Please talk to your child about this and ask them what they want to be when they grow up. On Wednesday they should come to school prepared to talk about what they want to be when they grow up in the following format:

“When I grow up I want to be _____________ because_________________”. And three things that this person does. They should also bring costumes that can fit over their uniform and or a prop. Some suggestions are: a shirt, tie, glasses, hat or apron. Be creative as your child will be presenting in front of the class.

We would also like to invite you to come up at this time if you would like to share your own career reflections . Looking forward to seeing you next Wednesday.

Snow day today Monday January 26,2016. Please be careful and stay safe if you must go out.

 

Black History month family projects:

Kindergarten will be honoring Black history month during the month of February by learning about famous African Americans that made a difference. This months project is to have a discussion with your child about one individual and one thing he/she is known for.

Your child will then present the information by acting out the role of their pioneer. You can use simple props ( a shirt, glasses, hat etc) and a drawing that will help bring it to life. You will help your child remember one important fact about the person. Each child will present and say: ” I am ____________and I am famous for_________”.

On a 1/2 of a poster board please have 3 or 4 facts about your child’s black history person. Remember to practice this information with your child. Please do not cut and paste information from the internet. Keep it simple and child friendly as your child should be able to present all information on the board. A detailed letter will be going out on Tuesday 1/26/16.

Projects are due 2/1/16 and children should be prepared to present this week as well.

 

Reminders:

Family Culture: As part of our study of families we discussed family traditions. We asked that you talk to your child about your families traditions and celebrations. Additionally your child was asked to bring an object or a picture of an object that represents a family tradition to share with the class. If you have not already done so please submit it by Wednesday January 28, 2016.

Superkids: In honor of completing our newest Superkids book; Icky we will be having a celebration on Friday January 30th. Please send in a sandwich sized bag of mini marshmallows. I will provide the remainder of the supplies.

Welcome back! The last few months have truly flown by! I am looking forward to the remaining months ahead as your child prepares to graduate kindergarten in June. I have many new and exciting things planned for each subject area. Keeping this in mind, I am asking for each child to bring in the following supplies as your child has run low:

– At least 6 SHARPENED pencils

– a box of crayons

– 4 glue sticks

 

** Students will keep these supplies inside their desks. We are working on becoming more independent and taking care of our things. This will definitely be a start!

We will be introduced this week to our new Superkid, Lily. She has such a vivid imagination! Lily loves to play with her family of “lions”, including brother and sister, Lass and Lad. On Monday, December 7th, Kindergarten will perform in OLCA’s Annual Christmas show. There will be 2 performances this year- 1:00pm and 6:30pm. Information regarding this show has been posted on the school’s website and a note was sent home from the music teacher last Wednesday. Please be advised of the “Dress” guidelines, as well as the time to be at school for the evening performance. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $5 each. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

School will be closed on Tuesday, December 8th, in observance of the Immaculate Conception. The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary being conceived without original sin. It is not referring to when Mary conceived Jesus. Classes will resume on Wednesday, December 9th.

On Thursday, December 10th, students will have the opportunity to shop at our 1st Annual Scholastic Book Fair. Books range in price from $1 to $20+ . If you would like for your child to purchase a book/books, please send money in an envelope, labeled with their name and amount. A preview of the book fair will be shown at our Christmas show, as well as on Wednesday for the children. This allows them the opportunity to “window shop” before their actual shopping date. Please help support our school!

There is a $1 Dress Down Day on Thursday, December 10th. If you’d like to participate, please send in money with your child. Thank you.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Friday, December 11th. Please note that there is an 11:45am dismissal on this day. Conferences will be begin promptly at 3:00pm. Scheduled conference times were sent home. If you cannot make the time you arranged, please let me know and I will schedule a different date and time to accommodate your needs. Thank you.

KINDERGARTEN Healthy Habits Poster

In Social Studies and Science, your child is discovering ways in which they can take care of their bodies. They have been participating in a variety of different activities, including physical exercise. Students even sang songs about ways in which they can keep their bodies healthy. As a culminating activity to this mini unit, students are asked to create a poster, based upon one of the healthy habits discussed. Such habits included:

*bathing *brushing your teeth *wearing a seatbelt *fighting germs *exercising *eating healthy foods *washing hands *combing your hair

Please note that there are several others as well, which can be found in the take home book that your child has made. Requirements for this poster are simple, which is why it is expected that your child do all the writing and you assist in spelling of the words. The poster should include the following:

*Title of the “Healthy Habit” or way in which you take care of your body

*Brief description for the above

Ex: I wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner.

I comb my hair with a brush.

I brush my teeth with toothpaste.

*Pictures that portray the title- These can be hand drawn, cut from magazines, printed from a computer, or actual photographs of oneself or others depicting your habit

The poster should be oak tag sized and include your child’s name and grade on the bottom. Thank you for your cooperation.

This year, Fire Safety and Prevention week falls from October 4th-10th. Students will watch various video streams on how to protect themselves from a fire, as well as complete a variety of activity worksheets. We may even have a visitor who will help us understand the importance of this special week 😉 In the end, we will discover that…

This will be the last week students will be learning the sound and formation of the letter Cc from our SuperKid buddy, Cass. We will have our first assessment on Thursday. Students will be asked to find pictures that begin with Cc, form the letter Cc, circle words that begin with Cc, and draw pictures of things that begin with Cc.

Hope everyone had a great weekend! We have received a finalized itinerary for our SPECIALS schedule. Students will have SPART (Spanish and Art) on Mondays and Thursdays, MUSIC on Tuesdays, GYM on Wednesdays, and LIBRARY on Fridays.

* Please make sure that your child comes dressed in the appropriate school uniform each today. Unfortunately, we will have to issue uniform violations for those that do not abide by the school’s policy. This includes jewelry, nail polish, sneakers, belts, etc. Please refer back to the Family handbook for proper uniform dress. After several REPEATED uniform violations, your child will be issued an incident report stating that they have not followed OLCA’s dress code. Thank you for your understanding in regards to this matter.

 

* DISMISSAL on Friday, October 2nd will be at 11:45am. Please make the proper arrangements to pick up your child on time. If a student is not picked up by 12pm, they will be sent to our After School program.

 

* Students are allowed to Dress Down on Wednesday, September 30th. The cost is $1. If your child will not be participating, please make sure that they come dressed in their gym uniform as this is our designated gym day. Thank you.

 

* Each week on Thursdays, OLCA will be sponsoring a bake sale that will benefit a particular class. Goodies range from 25 cents to $2. Please send money in an envelope with your child’s name and amount if you’d like for them to participate. Students will purchase these treats during lunch. Please note that this is completely optional. This week’s sale will help raise money for the 8th grade.

 

We will begin our SUPERKIDS Literacy program this week! Your child will be introduced to the 1st character, CASS.

I can guarantee you will be hearing them sing her song for days! Keep a look out for the words to her song in your child’s folder. We will be sending home information shortly with your child’s login information so that they may have access to the SUPERKIDS portal at home as well. If you’d like to know more about the program in the meantime, feel free to visit www.superkidsreading.org.

* Please remind your child to return their Super Kids and GO MATH workbooks (posted below) to school the next day when they receive homework in them. All homework in the books will be dated and circled, as well as posted on this website. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE JOIN ME FOR BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd from 6-7pm. This is your opportunity to meet and discover all the wonderful things that I will be doing this year. I will conduct 3, 20 minute sessions to allow parents with multiple children to visit their other teachers. A little bit about homework in Kindergarten…

Homework provides an opportunity to deepen understanding and enhance skills beyond the school day. The goal for each child is to become an independent worker as the year progresses. When help is needed, explain directions and guide your child without doing the work for them. It is a good idea to have a consistent time and place to work on homework. Have a quiet place where your child can sit comfortably with all supplies needed. All homework must be returned the next day, as we will be checking it daily. Students will receive a Home Report for two incomplete or missing homeworks. Students who miss more than three homework assignments in one trimester will receive a maximum grade of “2” in homework on the report card.

*Parents must sign their children’s homework each night to indicate that they are aware that their child has done their homework. Returning tests and graded assignments with a parent signature are a part of the child’s homework grade.

Kindergarten homework will consist of workbook pages, worksheets, blending words review, memory word review, and a record sheet for listing books you read together. Please plan to spend 15-30 minutes each night doing homework with your child. Homework is given daily Monday – Thursday. The only time a weekend assignment will be given if it is an extension of a project/ activity. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there may be times when homework simply cannot be completed. Please just let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your child’s needs. However, we ask that this is not a repeated pattern.

I am delighted to be your child’s teachers this year. Kindergarten is a time for new beginnings. They will make friends and learn lots of exciting things each and every day! Our days and weeks will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities for learning and growing. We’ll explore letters, discover sounds, and be doing writing activities, too! We’ll be learning all about numbers and build on important math concepts that revolve around the Common Core Standards. These will include sorting, counting, graphing, classifying, patterns, time, money, addition, and subtraction. Your child will also turn into “scientists and explorers” during our Science and Social Studies lessons. We’ll strengthen our love and devotion to God when we read passages from the Bible in Religion and do a great deal of cross-curricular projects throughout the year. I’ve spent the last few days before the school year decorating our classroom. When the children came in on the 1^st day, they loved their room! We’ll discuss more about our daily schedule, homework and school policies, our kindergarten educational goals, and expectations during Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 22nd. I am certain your child will have a fun-filled learning experience this coming year. I look forward to seeing you soon!
