Halloween Celebration

Friday, October 27

The in-school celebrations will begin in the morning with our annual costume parade after morning prayers. Parents are welcome to attend. Please make sure all student costumes are consistent with the guidelines distributed last week. Students out of costume are to wear their gym uniform, and may not dress down.

Halloween Dance (Grades 4-8)

We are looking forward to our special celebrations outside of the school day for both our older and younger students. Please note that due to the parish needing the 128th Street building this weekend, we are moving both celebrations back to the Rockaway Boulevard campus. Parent volunteers are welcome for both events.

All Saint’s Day Liturgy

We will have a special liturgy for All Saint’s Day next Tuesday morning. Students may dress up for free.

Picture Days

We will have our individual photos taken on November 9 and our class photos taken on November 10. There will not be gym on either day, and all students are required to wear their full uniform on both days.

OLCA is partnering with Operation Dreamcatcher to collect non-perishable foods and health products for Haitians affected by Hurricane Matthew. The flyer is attached to this newsletter! We hope you are able to help us with this special collection.

United Nations Assembly

Monday, October 24

RB: 9 AM / 128: 1 PM

I am proud to announce that four new flags will be part of our annual ceremony this year: Cameroon, Croatia, Lithuania, and Venezuela! Remember that Monday is a free Dress Up day and that cultural dress is encouraged. Thank you to Ms. Paz, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Cotto, and Mr. Morales for their help with this event!

Halloween Celebration & Activities

Friday, October 27 – Saturday, October 28

We will carry on with our annual tradition of students being allowed to wear costumes to school for Halloween,. This year, we will have in school activities throughout the day on Friday, October 27, and special events for Grades 4-8 on Friday evening, and for Grades N-4 on Saturday afternoon. Flyers have already gone home for the two events, and guidelines for costumes during the school day are included with this newsletter, along with a permission slip for the haunted house. The same rules apply for the events on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. We will be closed on Halloween (Monday, October 31) for a professional day.

Tuition Reminder

Just a friendly reminder that tuition is due on the first of the month, and that all accounts should be current through the third tuition payment at this time. A late fee will be added on Tuesday, October 25, so please bring your account up to date by then. Thank you to all of the families who are already current.

Families that raise $150 will be excused from the Spring Raffle Fundraiser. All students may dress down for free for this special event, and parent volunteers are welcome.

Our seventh annual United Nations Assembly is almost here! On this special day, the countries of origin of every student and staff member are acknowledged and celebrated. The oldest child from each country will carry the flag at their campus assembly. Dress up is free, and cultural dress is encouraged. Parents, as always, are very welcome at this special event.

Progress Reports (Grades 1-8)

Thursday, October 27

As we near the midpoint of the first trimester, all students will receive progress reports on Thursday, October 27. These reports will be a snapshot in time, including both your child’s grades as of that date and all of their assignment marks. Please return the signed report to your child’s homeroom teacher the following day.

Terra Nova Testing

Tuesday, October 11 – Wednesday, October 19

Our annual standardized testing for Grades 3-8 begins next Tuesday and will continue through the following week, with make up days scheduled for Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21. During this testing period, parents should expect a smaller amount of homework, as we want the students to come to school rested and ready to do their best. Teachers will make instructional adjustments based on the results of these exams, so it is important that the students put in their strongest efforts! Results will be shared with parents at our first report card conferences in December.

Catholic High School Fair

Tuesday, October 11, 6:00 PM (RB Campus)

Thirteen Catholic High Schools will have representatives at our upcoming Catholic High School fair. Another reminder: students must be in their full, regular uniform to attend. We encourage attendance from students in Grades 6-8.

The National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016 and they want everyone to join the party! All National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone during special events. The next one coming up is just around the corner.

We have been learning about Chinese New Year this week! Did you know that it is the year of the Monkey? Did you know that the color red is symbolic of good fortune? Did you know that origami, the art of paper folding comes from China? We challenge you to try the following:

We are learning a new song in Spart! With this song we will review/learn ten verbs in Spanish. The song invites us to “Vengan ya, vengan ya,” which means come now, come now and participate in different activities. Stay tuned for our mini “picture dictionaries” that will be up in the auditorium soon.

Epiphany House Blessing

The Church has a custom of blessing homes on the Feast of the Epiphany and the weeks following. Family and friends gather to ask God’s blessing on their homes and those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows.

A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk blessed during the Epiphany liturgy and write above the home’s entryway, 20 + C + M + B + 16. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and 2016 is the year.

In Spanish and Art we have been making our own inscription to hang over our doorways at home. Here is one for you to print, color, and hang (just click on the link below). Some classes have even blessed their classroom door!

Wednesday marks Three Kings’ Day, the last of the 12 days of Christmas. Observed annually on Jan. 6, Three Kings’ Day is a Christian holiday also known as Día De Los Reyes Magos and Epiphany. It revolves around the adoration of the three wise men, or magi, who visited the infant Jesus after his birth.

In Spanish speaking countries around the world children place their old shoes outside their doors before going to sleep the night before. When they wake up, their shoes are full of toys.

Here are some other facts about Three Kings’ Day:

  • The kings’ names were Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar.
  • They gave Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh.
  • The kings brought their gifts in vessels called ciboria.
  • Some children leave hay in their shoes for the kings’ camels to eat. Others leave letters to the kings. Sound familiar?
  • Three Kings’ Day activities often include the singing of aguinaldos, or Christmas carols.
  • In New York City, El Museo del Barrio will host its 39th annual Three Kings’ Day parade from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST. Scores of people will turn out to watch the event, which features honorary kings, thousands of costumed school children, live camels, gigantic hand-made puppets and performers who bring lively music and colorful dancing. There’s a street party afterward.

We have been very busy these first weeks of school! All classes discussed the important visitor we recently had in NYC, Pope Francis who is from the Spanish speaking country of Argentina. We worked on different Pope artwork.

HOMEWORK REMINDER:

5th grade @ RB - your step by step Pope drawing was due on Thursday 10/8/2015. This was assigned on Friday October 2nd. If you still need an extra day you can hand it in tomorrow Friday 10/9. If you can’t find your sheet you can use the picture below (“Learn to Draw Pope Francis”).

HERE IS A FUN PROJECT YOU CAN TRY ON YOUR OWN:

Supplies:

  • paper
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • crayons, colored pencils, markers

Follow these tips for a variation from the video:

  • hold your paper landscape
  • start with 5 vertical lines, some straight some at a slight angle
  • all five lines should start at the top of the paper and end at the bottom of the paper, try to space them out - they should not cris-cross
  • choose three of these basic shapes - circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval
  • color each section that you have created a different color
  • HAVE FUN!
