100th Day of School

We are fast approaching the 100th Day of school and we will be having a celebration in school on February 15th.  We will be doing some fun activities during the day and having a party in the afternoon.  The children decided they wanted to dress up for the day and they choose to dress the way people dressed 100 years ago.  Think; Titanic, The Great Gatsby, or Little House on The Prairie.  You can Google “How did people dress in 1919 or 1920 for ideas.  Keep in mind the children need to be safe and comfortable.

Children should start and collect 100 items in a plastic jar or zip lock to bring to school on February 11th.   Some ideas are: pennies, marbles,

In celebration of Valentine’s Day we will be having a party in school.  If you are able to, donations are needed for the celebrations this week. Some suggestions are; cupcakes, cookies, pre-cut brownies, individual bags of chips, goody bags, small water bottles, juice boxes, napkins, or plates.

Reading:

We have completed the first month of tracking of our evening reading on our reading logs. The children did a great job and we will have a party on Friday February 8th for everyone to celebrate.

Beginning in February the following are the guidelines for reading:

  • Every child must read for at least 20 minutes every night, including Saturday and Sunday. Reader can count towards the 20 minutes.
  • If you read for 30 minutes or more every night, including Saturday and Sunday you will be invited to a special celebration at the end of month.
  • Reading log must come to school every day.
  • A parent or guardian must sign the log.

This is meant to be a fun and enjoyable time so that children will love to read.  Modeling is a great way to pass on the love of reading.

100th Day of School Celebration:

On Friday February 15th  we are going to be celebrating the 100th day of school.  We are going to be 100 days smarter and deserve a celebration!

To prepare for this day the children need to collect 100 items ( all the same ) and place them in a zip lock bag or plastic jar.  Some ideas the children came up with  are: shells, beads, coins, marbles, pebbles, buttons.

We will also be dressing up that day.  Our theme is dressing the way people did 100 years ago.  Think Titanic, Little House on the Prairie, The Great Gatsby !  Google “how did people dress  in 1919 ”  This can also be cultural dress.  Nothing extreme and remember we have to go up and down stairs the children need to be able to move around without restrictions.  Think safety!

We will be having a party in the classroom with activities like butter making, and eating foods from that era.  I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

Advent and Christmas Review

Grade 1

Advent is the season before Christmas.  Advent is four weeks long. It is a time to get ready for Christmas.  We use an Advent Wreath. The wreath has 4 candles. There are 3 purple candles and 1 pink.  We light the pink candle the 3rd week.  We are waiting for Jesus, the Light of the World.

Advent The priest wears purple during the Advent season.  On the third week he wears pink.

God chose Mary to be Jesus’s Mother.

Mary said yes to God.  God gave Mary the gift of Grace.

Grace makes us beautiful to God.  Mary loves Jesus very much. Mary loves us too. We call her the Mother of God.  Our school is named after Mary.

Angels are messengers of God.   God sent the Angel Gabriel to ask Mary to be the Mother of God.  Mary said yes to God. We need to say yes to our parents and teacher when they ask us to do something.  An angel also went to the shepherds and told them not to be afraid. They were the first ones to o find Jesus

The Christmas season starts on December 25th and ends on January 6th, Three Kings Day. Christmas is Jesus’ birthday. Jesus is the Son of God who came to save us.  Jesus was born in Bethlehem.   The 3 Wise men followed the star to find Jesus.   During the Christmas season the priest will wear white.  We give gifts in honor of Jesus.  Jesus is the greatest gift from God.
